Deep Cleaning With Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning

By Grace Daniels

Going to the dentist is something many people dread. Even so, there is little better than the feel of your teeth after they have just been thoroughly cleaned by your dentist. In years past, the dental hygienist had to spend a long time manually scaling your teeth. Now, however, the dental hygienist can use ultrasonic dental cleaning to get the work done in a fraction of the time.

The widespread availability of soda, sugary foods, and the like, means that tooth decay, staining, gingivitis, and gum disease are rampant. The use of tobacco products and smoking are also very common and very bad for teeth. Virtually everyone has dealt with bleeding, puffy gums or stained teeth at some point in their life. In our culture these things are very common and a big problem. The consumption and use of sugary substances and tobacco products can cause an overgrowth of bacteria which contribute to these problems.

Your pearly whites not being pearly white is only one of the many problems that this can cause. You may also develop gum tenderness, pain, and loss of teeth. The mouth is the beginning of your digestive system so your body's health begins there. Allowing bacteria to multiply is not good. Fortunately, a deep cleaning from your dentist can reverse problems such as gum disease and gingivitis.

Of course the best way to deal with oral problems is by prevention. Avoiding foods and drinks that are sugary and acidic are key to prevention. So is regular brushing and flossing of your teeth. The last, very important step in preventing oral problems is regular dentist appointments.

The practices used vary by different offices, but there will always be a scaling of the teeth. This can be done manually or ultrasonically. Manual scaling is when the dental hygienist manually scrapes the teeth with an instrument to remove the plaque and bacteria. This can take a long time and is hard on the hygienist's wrists, not to mention it can be very uncomfortable to have someone working in your mouth for that long.

The second option is the use of ultrasonic cleaning. This method uses vibrations that are extremely fast to do the same work in a fraction of the time. Both the dental hygienist and the patient can appreciate this since it makes the whole thing much easier.

Since the ultrasonic technology uses fast vibrations you may feel a tingling on your gums or even a little bit of a "zinging" feeling on your teeth. This is normal and doesn't last long. It's also possible that the vibrations will cause the hygienist's hand to be numb, but this is only temporary.

If you are in need of an exceptionally thorough and deep scaling, your dentist may choose to use both manual and ultrasonic dental cleaning. This may be especially important if you are trying to reverse gum disease or gingivitis. The use of both cleaning procedures will also leave your mouth feeling cleaner than either one can do on its own.
